What Natalie Portman’s Angel City FC Means For The Future of Football Culture

A female-led ownership group run by Natalie Portman has created its own National Women’s soccer team in Los Angeles.

Since 2019, the fight for equal pay in sports has been stronger and more
coordinated than ever, especially in football/soccer in the US. However, there is a lot of processes that are needed to be made, to make this possible.

This was the initial thought in creating Angel City FC, the newest kid in the block in US Women’s Soccer.

From now on, I will write the word “football” instead of “soccer” because I’m not from the US.

Portman’s idea to create a football club in Los Angeles came after the US Women’s team demanded equal pay. Portman, who is a founding member of the Time’s Up group, shared her idea with venture capital executive and co-member Kara Nortman, and tech executive Julie Uhrman.

Portman claims that she’s not a sports fan herself, but she was bothered that the top female players were underpaid in contrast to their male counterparts.
